Job Classification and Duties. Counseling psychology interns may be hired as “teacher associates” or graduate assistants.
Teacher Associates:
Interns who are hired as "teacher associates" receive salary and benefits commensurate with that job designation. As teacher associates, counseling psychology interns perform the job duties of assistant teachers, and are required to learn and practice teaching skills with the students assigned to their caseloads.
Graduate Asisstants:
Interns who are hired as graduate assistants receive a stipend of $13,000 and 20 hours of tuition remission. Graduate assistant responsibilities vary.
Student Eligibility. Centennial students are identified as eligible for counseling services through
- (a) parent requests
- (b) self referral
- (c) teacher referral
- (d) staffings
- Staffings are defined as
- periodic meetings of key Centennial personnel that allow for the sharing of in-house professional expertise for the development and evaluation of behavior intervention plans.
Parental permission is obtained prior to performing counseling services.
Counseling Sessions. Counseling psychology interns are assigned specific periods in which to conduct individual counseling sessions with students. Individual counseling sessions are generally scheduled during homeroom or study hall periods. Alternate times for counseling are available upon the recommendation of the school-based team and the flexibility within a student's schedule. All sessions are audiotaped.
Group counseling sessions are scheduled during the school day under the auspices of Social Skills instruction. In addition to teaching students the skills required for school success, interns are responsible for developing and implementing two curriculum units per term on topics such as drug and alcohol abuse, hygiene, anger management, goal-setting, managing family stress, or vocational preparation.
The content that is to be covered in social skills instruction with Centennial School students is presented first to the faculty so that teachers may become familiar with the lesson content with the aim of embedding the objectives throughout the Centennial curriculum.
Confidentiality. Interns are required to abide by applicable state statutes regarding the privacy of information that is acquired during counseling sessions.
Supervision. Interns are supervised by an on-site doctoral-level student with expertise in the field of counseling psychology. The on-site supervisor receives support and supervision in school-based practices from Centennial School personnel and technical support from a faculty member from the Counseling Psychology Program at Lehigh University.
