The Life Skills Support Program is designed for students who have a primary disability of
- emotional disturbance with mental retardation
- those students diagnosed with autism
Within this program students develop and maintain skills that will help them function independently and become productive members of their communities. Each student's program includes
- systematic instruction in functional academics
- community-based training
- life-skills instruction (i.e., instruction in self-help skills)
Skill instruction is embedded throughout the student's day and all instruction is aimed to promote the student's quality of life as s/he enters the adult community.
Students receive instruction across seven domains:
- communication
- daily living
- vocational
- domestic
- functional academics
- leisure and recreation
- motor skills
Students have the opportunity to participate in job experiences, some in simulated work situations at Centennial School, and some on actual work-sites in the community.
To facilitate skill acquisition and generalization, some of the Life Skills curriculum is delivered in community settings, giving our students multiple opportunities to interact and participate with non-disabled peers as well as adults. |
