About Us

The Competition
The Formula SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) event is a part of SAE International's Collegiate Design Series. The program is a global engineering competition among colleges and universities, where each team's objective is to design and fabricate a small formula-style race car with the understanding that each team represents a design firm. The intent of these firms is to design, build and market their vehicles to weekend autocross racers. The car, which serves as the firms prototype, is judged in a variety of static and dynamic events, which include technical inspection, cost examination, de sign analysis, performance, and endurance.

SAE International
SAE International has more than 121,000 members - engineers, business executives, educators, and students from more than 97 countries - who share information and exchange ideas for advancing the engineering ob mobility systems. SAE is your one-stop resource for standards development, events, and technical information and expertise used in designing, building, maintaining, and operating self-propelled vehicles for use on land or sea, in air or space.

Our Team
The Lehigh University Formula SAE Team is comprised of approximately 15 undergraduate students from all disciplines, who have a strong interest in motorsports. The organization is completely student operated, from design to manufacture. The Team's previous successes can solely be attributed to the commitment of its members, who do not receive course credit or other compensation for participation in the Formula SAE program.

As a Team, we annually attend the compeition held in Jackson, Michigan at Michigan International Speedway. In previous years, the team has also attended the competition in California. The competition is truly where the year-long project culminates, as designs from over 100 colleges and universities are present, each competing for the top spot. The designs continue to increase in complexity and thoroughness, as students push the evelope with more and more advanced vehicles.

Joining the Team
The Formula SAE competition is designed for students to conceive, design, and fabricate small, formula-style racing cars for competition in the annual events supported by SAE International. The rules of the competition are designed in such a way to challenge students and emphasize creativity in the vehicles' design. The cars are buildy by each team over the period of about one year and are taken to the annual competition for judging and comparison with approximately 120 other vehicles from colleges and universities throughout the world. The end result is a great experience for young engineers, as Fomula SAE provides a meaningful engineering project in which stendts can participate and learn.

Lehigh Formula SAE is open to any student, in any major, in any college. Besides engineering majors, disciplines within business are also highly valued at the Formula SAE competition, as aspects of the project include financial analysis, market evaluation, and presentations. To join, come to a meeting or email us. Meetings are held every Tuesday at 6pm in Packard Lab room 360.
