Office of the Vice President and Associate Provost for Research and Graduate Studies
The Vice President and Associate Provost for Research and Graduate Studies (VPR) is the chief research officer of the university and the spokesperson on all research issues.
The VPR advises the President and Provost on research and graduate and postdoctoral student policies, and works with the President and others on strategic planning and developing research initiatives. The VPR also serves as the primary contact between the university and federal and state funding agencies as well as industrial partners.
The Vice President and Associate Provost serves as the champion for all research, scholarly and creative work, and graduate studies across the university, supports faculty and staff as they pursue their scholarship and research activities, assists those applying for research grants, mobilizes interdisciplinary teams to compete for large federal, state, foundation and industrial funding, and oversees and distributes faculty research grants, seed and ignition funds for innovative research ideas that require further development before competing for outside funding. The Vice President and Associate Provost also provides support and direction for Lehigh’s graduate programs, graduate fellowships, graduate recruiting, and funding of graduate students.
In addition, the Vice President and Associate Provost works with the President, Provost, Deans and department chairs to ensure that research and scholarly work are effectively pursued and appropriately valued in faculty and staff reviews.
The Vice President and Associate Provost for Research and Graduate Studies supervises the Office of Research and Sponsored Projects (ORSP) and the Office of Technology Transfer (OTT). In addition, the Associate Vice President for Government Relations and Economic Development and the Director of Graduate Student Life report directly to the Vice President and Associate Provost for Research and Graduate Studies to assist in governmental fund raising and economic development issues, contacts with federal, state and local officials, graduate professional development and advocacy for graduate student life issues, promotion of graduate programs, and recruitment of excellent graduate students. The Vice President and Associate Provost also works closely with Corporate and Foundation Relations (CFR) and industrial liaison officers in centers and institutes on campus to build and maintain external relationships with a wide range of companies and corporate partners in order to foster university-industry research collaborations.
