Other Opportunities
Local LGBT Histories Contest: To commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Stonewall riots, OutHistory.org, will award five substantial prizes for the best online exhibits about the local LGBTQ histories of particular villages, towns, cities, and counties in the U.S. since June 1969. The top five exhibits will receive awards from $5,000 to $1,000. OutHistory.org, the LGBTQ history website, is an ambitious attempt to put reliable information about this history on line, and to enlist the community in the effort. The history site, like Wikipedia, encourages anyone with documents, data, and citations to contribute to it. "OutHistory.org is an unprecedented experiment in recording the history of the LGBTQ community, by the community." OutHistory.org hopes to receive at least one exhibit submission from every U.S. state. Drafts of local history exhibits must be posted on OutHistory.org by June 28, 2009. Creators will be able to develop their sites over the next year, and winners will be announced in June 2010. Guidelines for "Since Stonewall" contestants are available on the OutHistory.org website.

The Fifth Annual Future of Minority Studies (FMS) Summer Institute. Cornell University
July 27 - August 7, 2009.
‘Queer Politics in Trans!national Contexts’: What would it mean to think queer in transnational contexts at this historical moment? This seminar takes up this question by examining the geographic, epistemic, and metaphoric conditions in which a wide variety of queer practices become visible. We will problematize the term queer, tracking how, why, and where it travels; examine the methodologies that generate truly grounded and comparative analyses of the struggles it has enabled, the political and intellectual spaces it has opened up as well as spaces that challenge its entry; and consider why political and economic questions matter in how we think queer. Texts for study will be drawn from literature and culture, history, popular media, and social science research. Eligibility: Doctoral students who have completed at least two years of their Ph.D. work, recent Ph.D.s, and junior faculty in temporary or tenure-track positions who are working on minority issues, are invited to apply to the 2009 FMS Summer Institute. Minority scholars and those who are at HBCUs and other minority-serving institutions are especially encouraged to apply. For the 12 - 14 scholars selected to participate in the summer institute, subsidy will be available to cover room, board, and (if needed) travel costs. Application deadline: January 15th 2009; results announced by March 9th 2009. Email for more info.
