Michael Andreychik and Michael Gill in Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin
Dr. Mike Gill and former graduate student Mike Andreychik (now Assistant Professor at Fairfield University) published a paper entitled 'Ingroup identity moderates the impact of social explanations on intergroup attitudes: External explanations are not inherently prosocial' in the December issue of Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin . Ageliki Nicolopoulou Invited Commentary in Human Development, and a New Chapter
Professor Ageliki Nicolopoulou, in collaboration with Jeff Weintraub (University of Pennsylvania), has published an invited commentary in Human Development entitled 'Why Operativity-in-Context is Not Quite a Sociocultural Model'. Their commentary is a response to Psaltis, Duveen & Perrett-Clermont (2009). In addition, Dr. Nicolopoulou recently published a chapter, 'Rethinking Character Representation and its Development in Children's Narratives' as part of an edited volume entitled Crosslinguistic Approaches to the Psychology of Language: Research in the Tradition of Dan Isaac Slobin, available from Routledge Publishers. Pat O'Seaghdha Appointed Director of Cognitive Science Program
Professor Padriaig O'Seaghdha has been appointed as the new Director of Lehigh's Cognitive Science Program. Offering an undergraduate degree and a graduate minor, the program takes an inter-disciplinary approach to studying cognition, incorporating interests and insights from psychology and artificial intelligence, philosophy and anthropology. Kate Arrington in Psychonomic Bulletin and Review
Professor Arrington published a paper entitled 'The Role of Attentional Networks in Voluntary Task Switching' in August's Psychonomic Bulletin and Review. This paper was co-authored with Melissa Yates, a former Lehigh undergraduate, now completing her Masters in Psychology at Villanova. Congratulations to Kate and Melissa!. (Posted September 2009)

Dominic Packer in Social Neuroscience
In collaboration with William Cunningham (Ohio State University), Dominic published a paper entitled 'Neural Correlates of Reflection on Goal States: The Role of Regulatory Focus and Temporal Distance' in Social Neuroscience. (Posted September 2009)

Lehigh Psychologists on the Summer Conference Circuit
Over the summer, several our faculty and graduate students hit the conference circuit - presenting their research to scientific audiences around the world:

- Dr. Ageliki Nicolopoulou journeyed to Spain, where she presented two papers regarding eliciting stories from preschool age children as part of a symposium on 'New Perspectives in the Use of the MacArthur-Bates Inventories' at the University of Santiago.
- Dr. Barbara Malt travelled to Holland to present recent research on Russian-English bilinguals at the International Symposium on Bilingualism, as well as the Annual Conference of the Cognitive Science Society (CSS).
- Dr. Padriaig O'Seaghdha, member of the program committee for CSS, presented a theoretical paper entitled ' Toward a langage-general account of word production: The proximate units principle', which has also been published in the Conference Proceedings.

- Graduate students Alexandra Frazer and Jordan Knicely also attended CSS, where they presented a poster entitled 'Expect the unexpected: Robust planning processes in speech production' with Dr. O'Seaghdha.
- Dr. Mark Bickhard gave a plethora of talks and panel discussions this summer at the Jean Piaget Society meeting in Utah, as well as the Interactivist Summer Institute in Vancouver. His talks included 'Is Cognition Necessarily Embodied?' and 'Developmental Psychology of the Whole Person: Transcending False Alternatives'. (Posted September 2009)

Research by Gordon Moskowitz in The New York Times
An article in July 6th's NYT, 'Why the Imp in Your Brain Gets Out', highlights research conducted by Gordon Moskowitz in collaboration with Adam Galinsky (Northwestern). The article describes recent research on ironic effects of thought suppression - how attempting to suppress "the visions that swirl up from the brain's sewage system" may actually make them hyperaccessible and more likely to influence behavior. Debbie Laible awarded NIH grant
Professor Laible received funding for her grant entitled 'Predicting Prosocial Behavior from Child Temperament: A Person-Centered Approach' from the National Institutes of Health. Congratulations to Debbie! (Posted May 2009)

Starla Weaver wins 2009 Donald T. Campbell Social Science Research Prize
Graduate student Starla Weaver won Lehigh's prestigious Campbell Prize for her paper entitled 'What's on Your Mind: The Influence of the Contents of Working Memory on Choice'. Her paper examines how the contents of working memory can bias selective and executive attention. Congratulations! (Posted May 2009)

Dominic Packer wins Williamson Prize in Social Sciences
Professor Dominic Packer won the 2009 Robert C. and Virginia L. Williamson Prize in Social Sciences for his paper entitled 'On Being Both With Us and Against Us: A Normative Conflict Model of Dissent in Social Groups', published in 2008 in Personality and Social Psychology Review. Dr. Laible awarded Class of 1961 Professorship
Professor Laible has been named the Class of 1961 Professor for 2009-2010. This endowed professorship is awarded for excellence to newly tenured faculty. (Posted May 2009)

Dr. Packer in May 2009 issue of Psychological Science
Dominic Packer published a paper entitled 'Avoiding Groupthink: Whereas Weakly Identified Members Remain Silent, Strongly Identified Members Dissent About Collective Problems' in May's issue of Psychological Science. (Posted May 2009)

Carolyn Brockmeyer secures post-doctoral postion at NYU
We are proud to announce that graduate student Carolyn Brockmeyer has accepted a position as Post-Doctoral Fellow & Project Manager in the Department of Pediatrics at New York University School of Medicine/Bellevue Hospital Center. Congratulations on this wonderful opportunity! (Posted April 2009)

Katrina Hermetet & Courtney Ignarri win ArtsLehigh Grant
Katrina and Courtney were awarded an ArtsLehigh grant, which focuses on bringing art to the community. The $1000 dollar grant will be used to take children from the Children's Home of Easton to an interactive exhibit at the Franklin Institute in Philadelpia, and to provide kids with art classes at Bethlehem's Banana Factory. Great work in support of this excellent cause! (Posted April 2009)

Professor Malt presents invited commentary on Machery's Doing without Concepts
Barbara Malt was one of two scholars invited to present a commentary on the recently published Doing without Concepts by Edouard Machery (2009) at a symposium in honor of the book's publication held by the Department of History and Philosophy of Science at the University of Pittsburgh. Almut Hupbach to join Lehigh's Psychology Department
We are extremely pleased to announce that Dr. Almut Hupbach will be joining the Psychology Department as an assistant professor. Almut is currently a post-doc at the University of Arizona, and does exciting research on the reconsolidation of memories, as well as cognitive development. Welcome! (Posted March 2009)

Alexandra Frazer in Journal of Language and Social Psychology
Alexandra and co-author Michelle Miller (North Arizona) published an article in the March issue of JLSP entitled 'Double Standards in Sentence Structure: Passive Voice in Narratives Describing Domestic Violence'. They observed biases in descriptions (including in published news reports) of domestic violence, such that writers are more likely to use the passive voice to describe violent acts committed by males than by females. Psychologists highlighted at Lehigh's Dialogue Across the Disciplines dinner
Accomplishments by four of our faculty were highlighted at the annual dinner celebrating research in Arts and Sciences:

- Professor Mark Bickhard was honored for work on his 'Interactivism' model, which is the recent focus of a special issue of Synthese, as well as a chapter in the Companion to the Philosophy of Psychology (see below for additional information).
- The program also noted Padraig O'Seaghdha's recent NIH grant entitled 'Syllable production within and across languages', as well as publications by Debbie Laible (Child Development), Barbara Malt (Psychological Science) and Dominic Packer (Perspectives on Psychological Science). Gordon Moskowitz and Heidi Grant publish edited volume on The Psychology of Goals
Containing 19 chapters by a 'who's who' of goal researchers, The Psychology of Goals has been described as "a field-renewing book that will launch a flotilla of new research" (Dr. Claude Steel). Published by Guilford Press, Gordon and Heidi's book is available at major book sellers everywhere. (Posted March 2009)

Mark Bickhard's Interactivist Model: A manifesto and a special issue
In a prolific start to 2009, Mark has published 5+ papers outlining his interactivist approach to cognition and representation. 'Interactivism: A Manifesto' appeared in New Ideas in Psychology, and the model was also the focus of a special issue of the journal Synthese. Congratulations to Mark! (Posted March 2009)
