Dr. El-Aasser pioneered an area of research known as "Miniemulsions" (coined the term in 1980), in the field of polymer colloids. Through continuous funding from NSF and Industry since 1978, Dr. El-Aasser and his students published 83 papers, 24 Ph.D. dissertations, and 16 M.S. Reports on Miniemulsions.
Industrial interest in Miniemulsions has been ongoing as demonstrated by the recent patents and manufacturing of several new products -- coating pharmaceutical pills, entrapment of drugs, and encapsulation of pigments. One key patent (assigned to Lehigh) was licensed by FMC for the manufacturing of "Aquacoat" for coating pharmaceutical pills.
