How To Submit A Manuscript

Prospective authors or editors of a manuscript should send a proposal that describes the project in detail. Typically, such a proposal includes: a cover letter; a table of contents; an abstract of no more than 500-words; and a current curriculum vitae.  Some proposals also include a sample chapter. These materials should be sent to:

We do not consider unrevised dissertations. We typically do not publish manuscripts when 50% of the content has already appeared in print. And, typically, we do not consider manuscripts that are under consideration at other presses.

If we are interested in evaluating your project, we will ask you to send us the complete manuscript, along with the Manuscript Information Sheet [for a copy of the Manuscript Information Sheet [click here]. We then send the manuscript to one or more external reviewers, experts in their fields who will assess your manuscript and make recommendations to the Director and Editorial Board. This process generally takes several months. Responsibility for decisions about publication rests with the Director and Editorial Board.

Manuscripts that the Press accepts for publication must, at the time of final submission, be submitted electronically as well as in hardcopy; use endnotes rather than footnotes; and conform to the University of Chicago Manual of Style, 15th edition, including its sections that deal with notes, bibliographies, and indexes.
