Author's Guidelines And Instructions
Instructions for Preparation and Revision of Manuscripts- We use The Chicago Manual of Style (University of Chicago Press), 15th edition, in copyediting all manuscripts. Authors should consult chapters 16 ("Documentation I: Basic Patterns") and 17 ("Documentation II: Specific Content"), the sections of the Manual dealing with notes and bibliographies. We require the use of endnotes for documentation of works in the humanities. We will only reluctantly accept the author-date method. We cannot accept manuscripts prepared using the MLA Style Sheet.
- A bibliography is essential for nearly all the books we publish. Please consult the appropriate sections of The Chicago Manual of Style for guidelines.
- For spelling, we use Webster's Third New International unabridged and Webster's Eleventh New Collegiate dictionaries, using the first spelling given for each word.
- All manuscript copy must be double spaced, including all notes and back matter.
- Volume editors must edit each paper for sense and grammar, checking lists of references and other apparatus for uniformity of style. Quotations should be taken from the same standard sources throughout. See The Chicago Manual of Style 2.39-40 for other volume editor responsibilities.
