Past Activities

In the last year or so, the MSA has been very active in pursuing its aims. As such, it held a number of events. Below is a description (and photographs, where available) of the events held.

  • Dravo Iftar (October 20th, 2004) - An iftar (breaking of the Fast) during the month of Ramadan, organized with the Gryphon Staff and RHA of Dravo to promote understanding between Muslims and non-Muslims at Lehigh: the Iftar was open to all Muslim students, Dravo residents and the larger university community. At least 50 students were present at the event. Pictures can be viewed here.
  • Fast-a-thon (November 1st, 2004) - the MSA took pledges from the student volunteers to fast with the Muslim students during a day of Ramadan and then provided a traditional Iftar (opening of the fast), free of cost to all volunteers. Over 40 non-Muslim students pledged to fast, an overwhelming response considering this was the first such event at Lehigh.
  • Weekly Iftars during Ramadan - One of the oldest activities of the MSA at Lehigh, we continue to try to bring the Muslim student community together for Iftar every Friday during Ramadan. Iftars are also offered on several Sundays. Pictures can be viewed here.
  • Islamic Awareness Day (March 21st, 2005) - An entire day where we wished to improve the awareness of Islam in the university community. Events included giving away free copies of the Qur'an, a lecture by Dr. Akhter Waseem (a prominent Lehigh Valley community member) on the 'Stories of the Prophets' and a showing of the PBS Documentary, 'Muhammed: Legacy of a Prophet'.
  • End-of-year Picnic (April 30, 2005) - MSA's first end of year picnic in a long-time. Current and former members along with their families were present at the event which was held in Saucon Village. Pictures can be viewed here.
  • Lectures - In addition to these events, we continuously strive to bring lecturers to Lehigh and in the past have brought or helped bring the likes of Sheikh Yusuf Estes (a former Christian Minister-turned-Muslim) and Dr. Bruce B. Lawrence (Professor of Religion, Duke University)
