KEYBOARD DIAGNOSTIC
All Composition and Conducting concentration music majors must take this exam. KEYBOARD HARMONY (MUS 2, 3, 4) Keyboard Harmony should be taken in tandem with harmony classes. Music 2, 3 and 4 should be taken together with Music 11, 82 and 83 respectively. It is the student's responsibility to add the appropriate course. Failure to comply with these requirements will cause graduation audit problems for those planning to major or minor in music. The course material is geared to enhance the students' understanding of harmony through keyboard exercises and drills. These classes are not supposed to replace piano classes. Students should not expect any emphasis on performance, and we strongly encourage all students to find additional space in their schedules for private piano study.

Traditionally, we split all students in the harmony class into smaller keyboard sections of up to five, based on schedules. The first harmony lecture will be visited by the keyboard harmony coordinator, and a form will be filled in by each student. Please bring your schedule with you at the first lecture of Music 11, 82 or 83. By the end of the lecture, we will establish the appropriate sections you will fit in.

Those entering the curriculum who have had extensive piano training may "pass out" of the requirement for these classes. In those instances, should a student pass out of the course, they need to drop the course immediately. You will not get a grade, it will not count on your GPA or transcript, but it will count as a requirement fulfilled on your registrar audit, and it will free your schedule of one credit.

Passing out occurs at the first session, and is administered by the instructor for the courses. In order to pass out, you may practice the final exam of either Music 2 (Keyboard Harmony I), Music 3 (Keyboard Harmony II) or Music 4 (Keyboard Harmony III). These exams are provided below. Please note that the resolution has been set to make printing possible.
