Getting to know Bethlehem, Past & Present

This page provides a number of different ways to learn about your new community. Please read the history of the city on the City of Bethlehem website and skim the other suggested websites below.

See the city’s website for a (1) page history of the city.

And link to great historic photos of the Southside (see any buildings you recognize?)

A whole bunch of great photos from old Bethlehem postcards

There are three bridges to the North side of Bethlehem: the Hill-to-Hill (rt 378), the Fahy or New St Bridge (closest to Lehigh campus, down hill from Campus Square), and Minsi Trail (down E. Third St; take a left just after Hayes St. comes in on your right). You can see older versions of bridges in these photos. A few more Southside photos from a developing website

NATURE WALKS: nearby obvious one, farther away hidden trail

Nature walk, anyone?

1)  Try Sand Island and link on to the towpath of the canal. You can bike or hike to Allentown by going west, or Freemansburg by going east. East is greener, west is more built up; both offer interesting views of area buildings, topography, etc.

Sand Island also has its own paths and recreation areas.

2) You can walk from the Southside clear up to Martin Tower and beyond (that big skyscraper you see off in the distance on the West side of Bethlehem!)

--go across the Hill-to-Hill bridge, walk down the steps to the Fest Grounds below the bridge on the northside. Walk under the Main St ramp.bridge and cross the wooden bridge into the Historic Industrial Quarter. Walk toward the mill bldgs, jog around them and continue up through the park along the asphalt road.  When you come to Old York Rd (where the highrises are), keep walking until you get to Union Blvd.  Cross Union and look for the trail marked at the end of the bridge. That is the beginning of the Monocacy trail that is on this map
