- MSE students sweep awards (December 2010)
The Department of Materials Science and Engineering renewed its claim as one of the nation's best when its undergraduate students swept the awards at the International Metallographic Contest for the second year in a row. Two Lehigh teams tied for first place in the category for undergraduate student metals and metal alloys, and another team came in third. No second prize was awarded this year. The contest, sponsored by the International Metallographic Society (IMS), was held in Portland, Ore., earlier this year. Daniel Grande, Nicholas Greybush, Bryan Hernandez, and Kylie Ford shared first place for their poster, titled "Metallographic Examination of an Endoprosthetic Knee." Their first-place finish was shared by the Lehigh team of Paul Sihelnik, Anthony Spizzirri, Marianne Sullivan, and Ukrit Thamma with their poster, "Metallographic Analysis of a Trumpet Valve." Completing the sweep were Lehigh's Austin Baker, Tiffany Chen, Christopher Chew, and Jacob Bumgardner, who placed third. All of the students are members of the Class of 2011.

The Center for Integrative Materials Joining Science for Energy Applications at Lehigh seeks to extend the lifetime of welds in the existing energy infrastructure and to increase the efficiency of the advanced welding materials used in new infrastructure. The new center is a collaboration among Lehigh and three other universities, three national laboratories, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), and 16 companies that produce materials for the energy industry. The National Science Foundation (NSF) approved the center, along with more than $5 million in funding over the next five years.

- Lehigh professors receive Major Research Instrumentation grants (September 2010)
Richard Vinci, associate professor of materials science and engineering, and Slava V. Rotkin of Lehigh's physics department, landed a highly-competitive Major Research Instrumentation (MRI) grant from the National Science Foundation. The grant will bring to Lehigh a scanning probe microscope (SPM). Unlike an electron microscope that requires a vacuum, SPM can characterize materials in liquid or air and is thus well-suited for research to support fields such as biomedicine and energy. Mark Snyder, assistant professor of chemical engineering, was part of another Lehigh team to obtain an MRI, along with Daniel Ou-Yang, Ivan Biaggio, and Volkmar Dierolf of physics, seeking to develop spectroscopic imaging techniques to analyze nanoparticles in confinement. Yet another successful Lehigh MRI team, consisting of chemistry professors Greg Ferguson and Dmitri Vezenov, will acquire a spectroscopic ellipsometer to surface and thin-film analysis.

- Researchers use nanoparticles to clean contaminated water (September 2010)
Iron nanoparticles 1,000 times thinner than a human hair have demonstrated an unprecedented ability to clean contaminated groundwater since they were invented 10 years ago at Lehigh. The palladium-coated particles have remediated more than 50 toxic waste sites in the U.S. and other countries in one-tenth the time, and at a much greater economy of scale, than traditional "pump and treat" methods. Writing in the journal Environmental Science and Technology, Lehigh researchers reported that the nanoparticles' ability to remove toxins decreases as the particles "age" and undergo structural change with exposure to water. The Lehigh team is composed of Weile Yan, a Ph.D. candidate in civil and environmental engineering, Andrew Herzing '07 Ph.D., a materials research engineer with the National Institute of Standards and Technology, Xiao-Qin Li '08 Ph.D, Chris Kiely, professor of materials science and engineering; and Wei-xian Zhang, professor of civil and environmental engineering.

The cellphone-sized, modular unit allows researchers to manipulate materials and literally see the results of mechanical testing at the nano- and micro-scales, and can be easily inserted or removed from the microscope on a project-by-project basis. Vinci is collaborating with Hysitron, a leading innovator in nanomechanical test instruments for the scientific community, in the development of the technology. Lehigh will begin testing and usage when the unit arrives on campus from Hysitron in early February. According to Vinci, this extension of campus microscopy capabilities will help advance nano-based materials and device research in diverse application areas such as biomedicine, telecommunications, and energy.
