Dr. Tarby first came to Lehigh University in January of 1961 as an assistant professor. After a year of teaching, he was called to active duty in the U.S. Army Corp. of Engineers and served with the Army Nuclear Power Program at the Atomic Energy Commission until June of 1963. He then returned to Lehigh to resum e his teaching and research. He is currently the R. D. Stout Professor and Associate Chairman of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering. His teaching and research interests include iron and steelmaking processes, thermodynamics and phase equilibria, and computer applications in materials. In 1965, Professor Tarby received the best paper award from the American Vacuum Society for study of carbon deoxidation of steel melts in alumina crucibles unde r reduced CO pressures. He won a teaching excellence award from the College of Engineering at Lehigh in 1984, and most recently (1994) became the first recipient of the Gilbert E. Doan Award for best serving the graduating class as mentor. Current research includes a study of the effect of small additions of a third component on the eutectic and peritectic temperatures of binary systems.
