Richard W. Hertzberg, New Jersey Zinc Professor, CCNY (B.S. Mechanical Engineering), MIT (M.S. Metallurgy), Lehigh University (PhD, Metallurgical Engineering)

Since joining the Lehigh University faculty in 1965, Dr. Hertzberg has served as Professor in the Materials Science and Eng. Dept. and Director, Mechanical Behavior Lab of the Materials Research Center. From 1987-1992, he was Chairperson of the MS & E. Dept. Dr. Hertzberg's research interests have focused on the fatigue crack propagation and fracture response of metal alloys, engineering plastics and their composites, and unidirectionally solidifed eutectic composites. In particular, he has examined the role of fracture mechanics and fracture micromechanisms in failure processes. Dr. Hertzberg has published more than 220 research papers and five books, including four editions of Deformation and Fracture Mechanics of Engineering Materials . He has also conducted several dozen industrial short courses on the fatigue and fracture behavior of structural materials in the U.S., Switzerland, and Korea.

Dr. Hertzberg is Fellow of ASM International and has received numerous distinguished teaching and research awards from Lehigh University, Alcoa Foundation, and ASM International.
