The 2008-2009 academic year is under way and Lehigh
University BAJA SAE will begin the migration to its
race team name, "Mountain Hawk Racing" -
however, the final decision has not been made about
whether it will be "Hawk" or "Hawks".
The 2008 team has reassembled and recruited several
promising new members. This year's program will include
a focus towards teaching each member to be more self
sufficient as well as improving team communication
and subdivision of work/tasks. This motion is in response
to captains', Kaufman '09 and Daubenspeck '10, foresight
for the team's future.
Brainstorming and design for the 2009 car has begun
and several innovations and ideas are already likely
to be incorporated. For example, the team hopes to
switch to 1.25" OD steel tubing with a .065"
wall thickness that should significantly lighten the
frame over what was used previously, 1" OD tubing
with a .120" wall thickness. The '09 car will
be Lehigh's most competitve car to date and will place
among the top 20 teams at competition.

LU Baja SAE competes at RIT international competition...
Arriving to competition at 5pm on June 7, 2004, the
first day of competition, the outlook for the team's
success was bleak. Team Captains Josh Kaufman and
Josef Daubenspeck were able to complete the '07 vehicle
for safety inspection by Saturday morning and proceeded
to compete in all Dynamic events and the 4-hour Endurance
Race on Sunday.
The team at competition consisted of only the two
captains. The '07 car managed to secure a 65th place
rank in the Suspension and Traction event with only
one pass and careful (slow) piloting from Josh Kaufman.
Josef Daubenspeck also managed a 71st place in the
Hillclimb event on his first attempt. Of 141 teams
registered and 126 teams present at competition, the
performance was worthy. The '07 car's team had no
time to test the car and did not actually drive it
until the third day of competition.
Lehigh BAJA overcame many obstacles in its current
team's first year of competition (2007) and hopes
are high for 2008 competition, taking place in June
in Montreal, Quebec.
