Lehigh University Police Chief Edward K. Shupp receives a Certificate of Law Enforcement Accreditation from the PA Chiefs of Police Association on May 19, 2007.

Police Officer of the Month Award - October 2007

Sgt. Brian Kelly was selected as Officer of the Month for October 2007.

Sgt. Kelly exhibits a positive attitude towards his job duties. He displays initiative with taking reports and continually conducts follow up investigations in a timely manner.

In addition, Sgt. Kelly has gone out of his way with preparing the October schedule. It was a difficult month; however, Sgt. Kelly managed to provide coverage over the month's schedule, as well as making necessary changes to allow for officer programs.

Sgt. Kelly, through his enthusiasm and dedication to the job, continues to be an asset to the Lehigh University Police Department.

Police Officer of the Month Award - September 2007

Officer Christopher D'Alessandro was selected as Officer of the Month for September 2007.

On September 16, 2007, during a routine patrol, Officer D'Alessandro noticed a male juvenile lying in the roadway of Upper Sayre Park Road . He checked on the juvenile, who had a minor head laceration. Officer D'Alessandro also ascertained the male was unconscious due to alcohol intoxication. He was able to rouse the student, and requested both Lehigh University and Bethlehem EMS be dispatched to the scene. Due to Officer D'Alessandro's observations and professional handling of this matter, the juvenile was transported to the hospital, treated, and prevented from any further harm. Officer D'Alessandro is commended on his actions and concern for the welfare of a member of the Lehigh University Community.

In addition, Officer D'Alessandro displays continued effort and dependability by actively working with the speed board and speed board trailer. He voluntarily sets up the speed board and moves the speed trailer to different locations every week.

Due to Officer D'Alessandro's actions on September 16, 2007 and his ongoing outstanding job performance, he continues to be a valued member of the Lehigh University Police Department.

Police Officer of the Month Award - August 2007

Lt. Robert Bruneio was selected as Officer of the Month for August 2007.

On August 3, 2007, Lt. Bruneio went above and beyond the call of duty when he arrived at the scene of a motor vehicle accident involving a motorcycle and immediately began providing first aid in an attempt to save the victim's life. In addition, Lt. Bruneio assisted Bethlehem Police Department in securing the scene and with traffic.

Lt. Bruneio's life saving actions as well as his calm demeanor throughout this incident showed professionalism and dependability under such a stressful situation.

Police Officer of the Month Award - July 2007

Officer James Connell was selected as Officer of the Month for July 2007.

On July 23, 2007, Officer Connell was performing routine building checks when he witnessed two juveniles entering Mudd. He approached them and asked if they had any information relating to the recent sprees of vehicle break-ins. One of the juveniles was willing to provide information which lead to the recovery of stolen property and future arrests for several cases involving both LUPD and Bethlehem Police Department.

Officer Connell's willingness to work together with the community has provided priceless information for several investigations.

Police Officer of the Month Award - June 2007

Officer Christopher D'Alessandro was selected as Officer of the Month for June 2007.

While performing a routine traffic stop for an expired license plate on June 17, 2007, Officer D'Alessandro gave chase to the driver near Stabler Arena, discovering the offender had a suspended license, no registration or insurance on the vehicle and was also in possession of drug paraphernalia which is the reason why the driver was trying to evade custody.

Due to Officer D'Alessandro's actions on June 17, 2007, he displays his essential role as a member of the Lehigh University Police Department.

Police Officer of the Month Award - May 2007

Sgt. Adam Miller was selected as Officer of the Month for May 2007.

On May 25, 2007, Sgt. Miller donated his personal time to assist with the Children's Miracle Network at Walmart. Sgt. Miller continually volunteers for many community programs, including children's benefits, student bike patrols, and community tables at freshman orientation.

Sgt. Miller, through his dedication to his job and the community, continues to be an outstanding representative of the Lehigh University Police Department.

Police Officer of the Month Award - April 2007

Officer James Connell was selected as Officer of the Month for April 2007.

Officer Connell has done an exceptional job in his capacity as a Community Police Officer. He is active in his patrol duties, and maintains a high visibility throughout campus. He consistently backs up other officers, makes routine traffic stops and promptly responds to calls.

In addition, Officer Connell has provided assistance with promoting the R.A.D. program at the resource tables for Women's Safety Week.

Officer Connell continues to be an outstanding representative of the University Police department.

Police Officer of the Month Award - March 2007

Sgt. Richard McGarr was selected as Officer of the Month for March 2007.

Sgt. McGarr was selected as Officer of the Month for successfully completing the PLEAC Accreditation process. Sgt. McGarr has been working on this important project for the department since June of 2003. He committed himself to the great responsibility of many long hours, hard work and requirement preparation in order to accomplish the department's accreditation.

Sgt. McGarr, through his devotion and dedication to the job, continues to be an asset to the Lehigh University Police Department.

Police Officer of the Month Award - February 2007

Sgt. Brian Kelly was selected as Officer of the Month for February 2007.

Sgt. Kelly was chosen as Officer of the Month for his actions involving a fire call at Whitaker Lab on February 9, 2007, in which a student had spilled a substance onto a hot plate, causing smoke and odor. Sgt. Kelly secured the scene and handled the situation in a calm and professional manner.

Sgt. Kelly provides quality service to the University community and he will continue to be an asset to the University Police department.

Police Officer of the Month Award - January 2007

Officer Mark Ferencin was selected as Officer of the Month for January 2007.

On January 13, 2007, while on bike patrol in the area of Morton St . , Officer Ferencin was clearing a crowd that had exited the Casa Misa Bar. At that time, Officer Ferencin observed gunshots being fired from a parked vehicle on Morton St. Officer Ferencin notified base and began a foot pursuit of the suspects. He was able to appropriately respond to the situation and direct Lehigh University and Bethlehem police units to take the suspects into custody. Through Officer Ferencin's diligence and quick response to a high pressure situation, the suspects were apprehended and subsequently charged.

Due to Officer Ferencin's actions on January 13, 2007, he continues to demonstrate his essential role as a member of the Lehigh University Police Department.

Police Officer of the Year Award - 2006

Officer Sean Burdock, a Lehigh University police officer for 8 years, was recently named Police Officer of the Year.

Officer Burdock, who began his career at Lehigh in 1998, was given the award for his dedicated role as a community police officer in the Saucon Village substation and Goodman Campus.

According to Edward K. Shupp, Chief of Police, Burdock has established strong relationships in his friendly interaction with the Saucon Village community and the programs he provides for the residents and their families. Residents are very comfortable with him patrolling the area and they know him by name and do not hesitate to stop and talk to him in general or to discuss concerns.

Burdock has previously received Officer of the Month Awards in September 2004, July 2005, January 2006 and November 2006. Regarding receiving the Officer of the Year Award for 2006, he states, “I was surprised to receive the award considering the caliber of the officers in the department. These are some of the best officers in the department I have seen in over 8 years, and to be one of the department's officers is a great honor.”

Officer Burdock has been a Firearms Instructor since 2001. He holds certifications with the NRA and Sig as a Pistol, Shotgun and Patrol Rifle instructor and Sig Armorer. Burdock continues to improve the department's firearms training and keeps the officers up-to-date on new techniques.
