Police |
| The Bethlehem Police Department is located at 10 E.
Church Street, Bethlehem, PA. It is under the supervision of a
police commissioner who is appointed by the mayor with the
consent of city council. The commissioner's immediate staff
includes a deputy commissioner and three
captains. |
| The
Police Department has an authorized strength of 142 sworn
officers, 22 full-time civilian staff and 60 part-time
employees including adult school crossing guards. The
Department is organized around a four-platoon patrol division
with supporting bureaus of Criminal Investigations, Community
Services, Traffic and Communications. The Department follows a
community policing philosophy. |
| The
Communications Bureau is an enhanced 9-1-1 center (Public
Safety Answering Point) for emergency calls within the City of
Bethlehem. It processes all emergency and non-emergency calls
(610-865-7187) for police, fire and EMS requests plus
offers after-hours resource for any City of Bethlehem
department. |
| The
Criminal Investigations Bureau is responsible for follow up
investigations of crime reports and has a specialized unit for
narcotic investigations. They supply a police officer to the
Lehigh Valley Auto Theft Task Force, the Federal Drug
Enforcement Agency, and FBI Violent Crimes Task Force and are
members of the Northampton County Drug Task
Force. |
| Community Services Bureau has a Community Policing
Division comprised of 14 officers. These 14 officers are
stationed in substations throughout the City and use either
motorcycles or bicycles for patrol purposes. Community
Services also has five officers as school resource officers
with an officer in each of the four public middle schools and
one in a public high school setting. These officers instruct
the D.A.R.E. (Drug Awareness Resistance Education) and
G.R.E.A.T. (Gang Resistance Education and Training) curriculum
at their assigned schools as well as any private school that
desires this instruction. Officers also perform community
police duties in the neighborhoods surrounding the schools.
This bureau also is responsible for establishing neighborhood
block watches, crime prevention programs, conducting in-house
training programs for police officers, maintaining police
records and a property/evidence room. |
| The
Traffic Bureau oversees traffic accident investigations,
supervises the adult crossing program, presents safety
programs to elementary age children and performs traffic law
enforcement. |
