Responsibilities

The University Police Department is responsible for the enforcement of all federal, state and local laws. Among these, the most commonly dealt with are the Crimes and Vehicle Codes of the State of Pennsylvania. The department also enforces all rules and regulations set forth by the university. Our security guards assist in the enforcement of the social policy. They work together with the Dean of Students Office to implement and enforce the regulations and to monitor their effectiveness. The department provides for an escort service that has safely transported more than 70,000 people since its inception in 1992. Our dispatchers monitor a complete alarm system for all university buildings.

The department is heavily involved in the area of crime prevention. We provide a variety of educational programs, seminars and materials related to this subject. These programs are given by professionally trained officers from the department. Some of these programs are Alcohol Awareness, Rape & Assault Education, C.P.R. and Theft & Crime Prevention. The programs are available to faculty, staff, students, etc., upon request. We also have open forums such as the Safety Block Party and we provide tips at student orientation on personal safety and the safeguarding of property.
