KEY AND LOCK-OUT POLICIES
KEYS. When you check into your
Residence Hall, Fraternity or Sorority, you will receive a key to your
room, a key to exterior building doors where applicable, and your ID
Card will be activated for access to the outside door of your building
if applicable. Each key is individually coded, allowing only the Office
of Access Control Services to identify the key and it's proper owner.
IT IS AGAINST REGULATIONS TO DUPLICATE KEYS. ALL KEYS MUST BE ISSUED THROUGH THE OFFICE OF ACCESS CONTROL SERVICES.
If you find keys or an ID Card, you must return them to the Office of Access Control Services immediately. UNAUTHORIZED
POSSESSION OF UNIVERSITY KEYS OR ID CARDS IS STRICTLY FORBIDDEN AND
UNDER PENALTY OF DISCIPLINARY ACTION UP TO AND INCLUDING EXPULSION FROM
THE UNIVERSITY.
When keys or ID Cards that have been found are turned into the Office of Access Control Services, they are identified and the proper owner will be notified. Upon notification, the proper owner must pick the key(s) or ID Card up within 48 hours (ID required). Failure to pick up the keys within that time will result in a mandatory lock change at the expense of the key owner. Non-university keys will be forwarded to the Lost & Found at the Student Activities Desk in the U.C.
Lost keys may NOT be advertised by posting a notice on a bulletin board, computer network, etc... Persons doing so will be subject to charges for a room lock change, as well as to disciplinary action.
If keys or ID Cards are lost, misplaced, or stolen, this must be reported to the Office of Access Control Services immediately upon discovery of same. Failure to do so may subject the student to disciplinary action. You must present an ID and you will receive
temporary keys. The old ID Card will be de-activated, and you will need to stop at the ID Office in the Ulrich Center to obtain a replacement. Back-track your steps and try to identify when and where you last had your keys.
If the room key was reported lost, the lock will automatically be changed and new keys issued at the Office of Access Control Services. It is your responsibility in the event of a lock change to not only make certain you pick up your own key, but also that
you notify your roommate(s) so that they can go to the Office of Access Control Services to obtain a key. The Office of Access Control Services will not attempt to notify roommate(s) of lock changes.
Once the lock is changed, a $25.00 fee will be charged to the Bursar account of the person who lost the room key to cover the costs involved in lock replacement and new keys. Occupants must return their old room key in exchange for the new key. Occupants unable to produce their old key for exchange will be fined $10.00. All new keys must be picked up within 48 hours of the lock change or the individual(s) will be fined
$15.00.
In the event an building key is lost, a duplicate will be issued upon presentation of your ID at the Office of Access Control Services.
Lost ID Cards must be replaced at the ID Office on the fourth floor of the Ulrich Center. A fee of $10.00 is charged for lost ID Cards, and cancelled ID cards CANNOT be re-activated, but it is required that found cards be returned to preserve University
Security.
After normal business hours report it to Campus Police at (610)-758-4200 instead.
Stolen keys or Access Cards must be reported to the Campus Police and a
police report filed. On the next business day, the student should come to the Office of Access Control Services to make arrangements for the lock to be changed and get new keys. A determination will be made as to whether the student will be liable for any lost key or lock change charges. That determination may be appealed with Residential Services
at 610-758-3500.
Damaged keys will be replaced by the Office of Access Control Services.
Students will normally be charged $5.00 for a replacement key unless it
is determined by the Access Control Services Locksmith that the damage
to the key was due to a malfunction of the lockset or core.
The keys issued (no substitute permitted) must be returned to Residential Services, a Residence Hall Coordinator or the Office of Access Control Services "within
the 24-hour period"... after termination of lease during the academic
year in cases such as: release from contract, fraternity interchange,
withdrawal, disciplinary action, or graduation; or permanent withdrawal
from room resulting from a room change to another location.
The penalty for not returning the specific key issued is $10.00 per key.
Additionally, the student will be responsible for the $25.00 cost to
change the lock on the room to ensure the security of the room and its
occupants.
Following final closing for the academic year, a 10 day grace period for late return has been established and the student will be fined a late fee of $5.00 per key. After the 10 days, students will be charged $10.00 per each key and $25.00 for the lock change.
LOCK-OUTS. If a student is locked out of their room, there are a few steps to take. First, try to find their roommate so that he or she can let them back in with their key. Second, locate a Residence Staff member in your building to access your room. Third, during working hours (8:15-12:00 and 1:00-4:45) come to the Office of Access Control Services and upon presenting an ID, you will be given a temporary key to your room and/or building. You will be given a 1 working day grace period to return the temporary key(s). Otherwise, it will be considered as lost and the procedures listed
under lost keys will be followed. Fourth, after 4:45, students should contact the Campus Police at 758-4200 to unlock your door.
