Reviewing Student Progress in Your Blackboard Course
Many faculty members here at Lehigh are familiar with the process of adding items to their Blackboard courses for their students to read. Typical content items may include the syllabus, lecture notes, study guides, homework assignments, or reading assignments. This ability to create electronic links and provide content for students is one of the most popular and frequently used features of Blackboard. There are several additional features related to course content, however, that are less frequently used, but can be quite valuable tools for monitoring how your students are progressing through the material that you have provided for them. Three of those tools are named: "Review Status", "User Progress", and "Performance Dashboard".
Review Status
When you activate "Review Status" for a particular content item, students can then mark that they have read the item. This information is stored within the course and can subsequently be viewed by both you and the student. Students can quickly and easily see whether or not they have viewed an item right from the content page.
- To enable (or disable) "Review Status" for an item:
- Go to the "Edit View" or the Control Panel view of the content area containing the item.
- Click on the "Manage" button.
- Click on the "Review Status" link.

- Here is what it looks like to your students on the page containing the items to be reviewed. Each student sees a personalized view of their progress through the readings:

User Progress
After you have activated "Review Status" for an item, you can review the progress that your students have made viewing this particular item by going to the "manage" page for the item as explained above, then click on the "Adaptive Release and Review Status: User Progress" link. Here is an example of a User Progress window for an item:

Performance Dashboard
The "Performance Dashboard" provides a summary of specific types of activities for each individual student. You access the "Performance Dashboard" from the link named "Performance Dashboard" in the Assessment area of the Control Panel. Some of the information provided includes a list of all students enrolled in the course, information about their last login to the Blackboard system, how many items (with "Review Status" enabled) they have indicated that they have reviewed, and a direct link to their gradebook entries. Here is an example of the Performance Dashboard:

By enabling "Review Status", you provide the means for you to easily review student access to a specific item , as well as reviewing more general indicators of the progress of an individual student in your course. Please contact your Instructional Technology Consultant if you have any questions about these, or any other, features of Blackboard:
