Practicum

Project trainees spend their first semester (240 clock hours; 4 hours per day, 4 days per week) working in two special education classrooms for students with LID. This provides opportunities to develop competencies related to the assessment, intervention, and instruction of students with LID.

Trainees spend their second semester (240 clock hours; 4 hours per day, 4 days per week) facilitating the development, evaluation, and implementation of inclusion plans for students from these same classrooms. In their role as integration consultants, trainees work with the special education and general education personnel to build system capacity for successfully including these students with LID in general education classrooms.

Examples of practicum activities included:

• Teaching organization skills (using locker, following daily schedules)
• Providing instructional support, parallel curriculum, and efforts to actively modify
   the general education curriculum
• Use of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) techniques
to support individuals with visual impairments and multiple disabilities
• Consultation with classroom staff to support newly acquired communication skills
   via AAC in community-based settings
• Social skills instruction using 1:1 and peer tutoring arrangements
• Consultation with teachers to facilitate the generalization of social skills across school
   and vocational settings
• Instruction of functional reading skills that include choice-making to enhance
daily living activities and sight words to facilitate transition between classes
• Conducting a functional behavior assessment to understand a frequent and
complicated set of behaviors with a kindergarten boy with autism and challenging behaviors
• Consultation and collaboration with the special education teacher to communicate FBA data
   and develop appropriate intervention
