Lectures and Symposia

To honor Professor Gipson, the Institute invites scholars to give occasional lectures and to participate in annual symposia on various topics in eighteenth-century studies. Please join us for this semester's events.

Fall 2008

  • October 23: Historian Jonathan Sassi in his lecture titled, Anthony Benezet's Antislavery Activism and Quaker Atlantic Print Culture, will discuss the uses and abuses of African travel literature in American debates over slavery, colonization, and race. His presentation will begin at 4:00 pm.
  • November 19th: Priscilla and Richard Roberts, authors of the University Press’s series, Thomas Barclay (1728– 1793): Consul in France, Diplomat in Barbary (Bethlehem: Lehigh University Press, 2008). This piece is a recent publication in Lehigh's "Studies in Eighteenth-Century America and the Atlantic World" series. The Roberts’ will present their findings at 4 pm.
