1. Scan 2. Rotate/Crop 3. Select/Edit

This section will teach you how to scan an image. If you only wish to edit an image you already have, choose File - Open, and open the file. Then skip to the Rotate/Crop section.

Let's start by discussing how to scan documents. After you install Macromedia Fireworks from Lehigh's Install Software function (located on the Start Menu and as an icon on the desktop), begin by running the application.

To select your scanner Choose File - Scan - Twain Select. For this tutorial, we will select the scanner for the IMRC computer lab.

At this point the instructions differ if you are using Windows XP or a previous version of Windows.

Windows XP

Now choose WIA-Hewlett-Packard ScanJet 6300C 1.0 and hit Select.

Place your document in the scanner and click File - Scan - Twain Acquire. The exact location of this menu is shown below.

Scanning

The scanning software will load and you will be able to choose options for scanning. Click on Adjust the Quality of Your Scanned Picture and a window will open similar to the one below.

First choose the option for your Picture type. A Color picture will be scanned in color, a Grayscale picture will include shades of gray, and a Black and white picture will only use black and white.

You may now adjust the Resolution (DPI). This determines the overall quality of the scanned file.

Graphics scanned for use on the Web will not need to be scanned with a resolution any higher than 72. Anything over 72 will not appear any different on a computer monitor.

Graphics scanned for basic editing and printing (such as flyers etc…) will not need to be scanned in at more than 150.

For high quality graphics scanning, a resolution of no higher than 200 is recommended. Above 200, image quality will increase only slightly while file size and processing time will increase drastically. It is not recommended that you use a resolution over 200.

Now hit OK to save your changes, and when you are back in the scanning software window, hit Preview to preview your image.

Once the preview scan completes, you may make further changes to your selected options and re-preview the scan if needed.

When you have selected your options and are satisfied with the preview, you will need to choose the size of your image.

The preview scan projects a box around the area it thinks it should scan. If you would like to change this move the mouse over one of the green boxes at the edge of the image, click the mouse, and move the corner of the box.

The areas of the image not being scanned will be grayed out, and will not appear in your final scan.

When you are finished resizing your image, click the Scan button. This will return you to the Fireworks program for further editing or saving of the image.

Your image may need some touching up.

Attempting to return to Fireworks will prompt the following screen:

Scan Glass

If you wish to scan and crop within Fireworks, select Scan the entire glass. If you wish to select a specific area of your scanned preview for final scanning, select Let me make a selection area. Press OK.

If you selected Scan the entire glass, it's likely that you have a raw image in need of some touching up.
