Contribute provides an intuitive interface for inserting images, creating links, and editing text -- similar to that of a word processor. The following section of the tutorial will teach you how to do each of these types of editing in Contribute.

TEXT

Text editing in Contribute works almost exactly like a simple word processor. Simply click your mouse in an editable area of the screen where you would like to enter text and begin typing. The format of text can be controlled by the text toolbar shown at the top of the screen.

Text can be manipulated in the following ways

  • Style - Available styles are defined by the designer of the site. The drop down box above that says Normal will select the style of the text. Heading 1-Heading 6 are always available and can be chosen. Heading 1 is the largest heading. If the designer defines additional styles, they can be selected here. Styles affect the size, color, font, and weight of the text.
  • Font - Font can be selected from the second drop down box above, lableled Default Font . It is recommended that only the Fonts available by default in the drop down menu be used, as not all computers have the same fonts installed.
  • Size - The third drop down box controls the size of the text.
  • Decoration - The next two items on the menus labelled B and I can be used to make a font Bold or Italic.
  • Allignment - The four buttons following on the text toolbar control alignment. From left to right they are, Align Left, Align Center, Align Right, and Justify.
  • Listing - To create a list choose either of the two items ensueing sequentially on the toolbar. The first item is an ordered list. This tool will number items in the list. The second is an unordered list, which simply sets list items with bullets.
  • Indentation - The following two items on the toolbar control indentation. The first button decreases indentation (moves it to the left) and the second increases indentation (moves it to the right).
  • Color - Color is controlled by the last two items on the toolbar. The A (second from right) controls the color of the text. The last button on the toolbar controls the background color of whatever item on the page you currently have selected.

IMAGES

Contribute also gives the ability to insert images into your website. Images can be inserted directly from a file on your computer, or you can use an image already on an existing site with a Contribute connection.

  • From Computer - To insert an image from your own computer, click on the Image button on the top toolbar and then select From my Computer. This will open a window which lets you browse to find the image you would like to use from the files on your computer. Choose the image and hit Select. Contribute will upload your image for you when you publish.
  • From Website - To insert an image from another website, you must first have an existing Contribute Connection to the site. At that point, simply click on the Image button on the top toolbar and then select From Website. Navigate to the image, then select the image, and hit OK.

Once you have inserted the image, you can adjust it by right clicking on it and choosing Image Properties. Doing so will bring up the window below.

Width and Height can be used to change the size of the image. The box Constrain Proportions ensures the image will not become distorted. Alignment allows left, right, or center alignment of the image. Border adds a border of "x" number of pixels around the image. The Description will appear when the cursor hovers over the image without clicking the mouse, and it is also used in handicapped-accessible browsers and text browsers. When you are done modifying your image, hit OK.

LINKS

You can attach a link to any text or image on your site. To do so, select the text or image, right click on it, and select Insert Link. Following are a few common options you can use.

Drafts and Recent Pages | Browse to Web Page | E-mail Address | File on My Computer

Drafts and Recent Pages

This is the most common option you will use when inserting a link. After choosing this option at the top of the window, you will see a list of all the pages on your site. Simply select the page to which you would like to link and hit OK. You can also link to a Section Anchor. These are anchored links within a page, so that when you click on a link, you are brought to a specific section of a page. If section anchors exist, you can select one by using the Section Anchor select box. (If you do not see this option hit the Advanced button).

Browse to a Web Page

Use this option to link to a page on the internet. If you know the address of the page, type it into the box next to the Browse button. If you do not know the address of the site, hit the Browse button to open up a browser. Navigate to the page you would like to link to and hit OK to select it.

E-Mail Address

To link to an E-mail Address, select this option. Just enter the address in the box labeled E-mail address: and hit OK.

File on My Computer

Select this option if you would like to link to a file that already exists on your computer but not on the web. Hit the Browse button and locate the file on your computer.Select it, and then hit OK. Contribute will upload the file to the web for you when you publish the page. If you would like to edit the file in the future, browse to the file within Contribute, and select Edit. Changing the file on your comptuer will not change it on the site until you publish it.
