John McGlade ’76, ’80G
President, Chairman and CEO, Air Products

Air Products (NYSE:APD) announced in August '06 the appointment of John E. McGlade to President and Chief Operating Officer by the Board of Directors, which took effect October 1, 2006. McGlade was previously group vice president of the Chemicals Division at Air Products.

John P. Jones, chairman and CEO, who previously also held the title of president, said, "Throughout his career, John has steered key strategic transformations such as establishing early partnerships in Asia and building our hydrogen franchises that have become a leadership position for the company. He has recently led our restructuring efforts in the Chemicals Group. His broad relationships and understanding of our businesses, customers and partners around the world will enable him to play a key leadership role in the continuing evolution of Air Products into a higher return and growth-oriented company."

McGlade joined Air Products in 1976 in the company's career development program and subsequently held various positions within its Gases business, including both domestic and international assignments. He was named general manager of the Chemical and Process Industries Division in 1994 and vice president of the division in 1996, where he led the growth of the company's premier position in hydrogen. In 2001, he became general manager and vice president of the Performance Materials Division. McGlade earned a B.S. degree in industrial engineering and an M.B.A. from Lehigh University.

When I entered Lehigh as an IBE (Integrated Business & Engineering) student, I really didn’t know which engineering discipline I wanted to pursue. I eventually chose Industrial Engineering because I felt it would be most beneficial for obtaining a cross-disciplinary type position upon graduation, as an Industrial & Systems Engineering degree can qualify you for many business-related jobs in consulting and other similar positions whereas other engineering degrees may not be considered. The fact that our IE/ISE department is ranked as one of the best in the country also helped me make my decision.

At the end of my sophomore year, I had interviewed for many internship positions including Hershey Foods, UPS, MarketRx, Boeing, and others. A position at Crayola specifically caught my attention, where I began working as a full-time employee during the fall semester while still a student at Lehigh. I continued to work at Crayola the following summer to complete my co-op requirements and gain real life industrial engineering knowledge outside of the classroom. This gave me the chance to re-think my future career path and decide what specific area of industrial engineering interested me the most. In addition while a student in ISE, I also began working on a new type of snowboard-binding design with the knowledge that I gained through the ISE department, for which I won a $25K grant.

While completing my master’s degree, I started working full-time for UPS as a management trainee in their Industrial Engineering department. Subsequent to that, I had other job opportunities and offers come my way from multiple companies including Accenture, Lockheed Martin, JPMorgan Chase, and other opportunities from within UPS. I’m currently working for JPMorgan Chase as part of their Technology Rotational Program in their credit card line of business. My current role is in Project Management, and there are plenty of other opportunities here to allow me to pursue a variety of technical and business related jobs.

Corporate Vice President, Global Supply Chain, Millipore Corporation

After graduating from Lehigh in 1976 with a BS degree in industrial engineering, I earned a PE license from the state of Pennsylvania and received an MBA from Duquesne University in 1980 while working in the greater Pittsburgh area for Babcock & Wilcox (steel industry). After spending four years too far from the east coast, my wife, Irene, and I headed to New England. Over the last 27 years we've lived in Massachusetts and Connecticut, and I've worked in the manufacturing sector of the healthcare industry.

In 2004, I joined Millipore as a corporate officer with responsibility for our global supply chain. Millipore is a $1.2 billion leading global provider of products and services that improve productivity in biopharmaceutical manufacturing and in clinical, analytical and research laboratories. Our Bioprocess Division helps pharmaceutical and biotechnology customers optimize their manufacturing productivity, ensure quality, and scale up production of therapeutic drugs, including difficult-to-manufacture biologics. Our Bioscience Division helps optimize laboratory productivity and workflows by providing reagents, kits, and other enabling technologies, products and services for life science research and development. In essence, we help our customers discover, develop, and manufacture new therapeutic drugs.

As Corporate Vice President, Global Supply Chain, I am responsible for our "order to cash" cycle. This includes more than twenty locations and three thousand people in North America, Europe and Asia (customer service centers, manufacturing plants and distribution centers). My responsibilities also include procurement, environmental compliance, health & safety, property management and Lean Six Sigma which are all led from corporate headquarters.

My start in healthcare began with Johnson & Johnson as an industrial engineer in their orthopedic business where I received wonderful opportunities in materials management, manufacturing management and manufacturing engineering management. Since then, I've also worked in CR Bard’s cardiovascular franchise, Bespak’s medical device contract manufacturing subsidiary, and Hologic’s breast imaging division, the latter two in general management capacities.

Jesse Salwen ’60, along with his wife Marty, stopped by the Industrial and Systems Engineering office early in January 2007 to visit the staff and see the plaque that was placed outside the Chair's office in recognition for Mr. and Mrs. Salwen's contribution to the Harold Mohler Laboratory. During his visit, Mr. Salwen recalled his years in the Industrial Engineering department with fond memories of his professors and the appreciated support he received from the Lehigh community. Mr. Salwen chairs and leads A. Klein & Company, Inc., a manufacturer of custom packaging, documentation, and media solutions. They are based in Claremont, North Carolina. Thank you Mr. & Mrs. Salwen!
