Employment Overview
(for Internal Candidates)
Lehigh University classified exempt and nonexempt staff are provided the opportunity to review and apply for vacant positions. This is supported by Lehigh University’s Staff Employment Value Strategy which acknowledges the important contributions of staff. Employees who are ready, willing, and able to expand the scope of their responsibilities and increase their contribution to their department, college, and university will be considered for vacant positions prior to consideration of external candidates. Vacant positions must be posted internally for five working days before recruiting externally. There may be times when a vacant or new position is not posted. The department head may choose to promote or laterally move another employee from the same department/area. When this type of internal promotion or lateral move takes place the position is generally not posted.
Employees have several options for professional growth including increased responsibility in the current position, a lateral move to another position or area, or promotion to a higher level position. Notices of Job Vacancy provide employees with information about opportunities for promotion and transfer. The Notice of Job Vacancy includes a brief description of the duties and the minimum qualifications required. Employees interested in other employment opportunities at Lehigh are encouraged to read these posted notices regularly and to contact the person listed on the Notice of Job Vacancy in order to submit an application or resume. Lehigh University encourages active interest in career development planning. Employees who desire assistance in career development may contact Human Resources.
Twenty five to thirty percent of vacant positions at Lehigh are filled annually by current employees. Recently, the Job Family Compass Initiative and accompanying Job Family Compass Guides provide detailed descriptions of the key accountabilities, skills, knowledge, and success factors for positions within each job family. The Compass Guides also provide a set of resources and tools that employees can use to determine their own career growth and development:
- Information on the Core and Managerial Success Factors
- An Accountability and Skill Guide
- Functional Success Factors
- A Staff Development Resource Guide
Additional information about job families, position accountabilities, skills, knowledge and experience, and success factors are available on the Campus Portal under the ‘Employee’ tab. Employees can also print a copy of their position description from the Campus Portal by selecting this link. If you need your position number and password to print your position description, contact Human Resources at 610-758-3900.
All job postings for classified staff positions are updated and posted on the Lehigh Website and in the Human Resources Office.
