Eligible faculty and staff members may purchase Dependent Life Insurance to cover their spouses or domestic partners and their children. The coverage is available in the following increments:
- Spouse or Domestic Partner
- Dependent Child(ren)
The premium cost for dependent life insurance is paid by the employee.
Dependent life insurance can cover a child from 15 days of age up to the end of the month in which he or she becomes age 19, if unmarried, or to the end of the month in which he or she becomes age 23 if unmarried and a full-time student.
There are some coverage limitations established by the State of Pennsylvania based on the amount of life insurance covering the employee:
- To receive the full value of coverage for a spouse or same-sex domestic partner, employees must have at least twice that amount for themselves
- To receive the full value of coverage for a child, employees must have at least three times that amount for themselves
Employees are required to submit Evidence of Insurability if they choose to enroll or increase the coverage level for a spouse or domestic partner during an open enrollment period.
