Where is The Hillel Society located? The Hillel Society is located in the Jewish Student Center at 216 Summit Street. The building is directly across Brodhead Street from the Alumni Memorial Building.
How many Jewish students are at Lehigh? There are approximately 600 Jewish students at Lehigh.
Is there a kosher food option available? Is the Jewish Student Center kosher? Although the university does not provide a specific kosher dining option , there are many ways to keep kosher and still eat balanced meals at Lehigh. For more information and help on how to plan a kosher lifestyle, speak with the Hillel Director. Also, the Jewish Student Center has a kosher kitchen. All meals served at the Jewish Student Center are kosher.
What are some of the programs that The Hillel Society offers? The Hillel Society provides students with a number of Jewish activities as well as opportunities for learning. Bi-weekly Shabbat celebrations as well as our Dine-and-Discuss series is offered throughout the year. Social programs particularly with other Lehigh Valley colleges are very important for a Jewish student’s Lehigh experience. Holiday festivities and celebrations occur regularly at the Jewish Student Center. Hillel Society members are encouraged to suggest and plan programs that fit their specific interests.
Is there a Jewish studies program on campus? Lehigh does offer students a variety of Jewish studies courses through the Berman Center for Jewish Studies. Hillel Board Positions and Descriptions
Hillel Society members are encouraged to become involved! The following are descriptions of leadership opportunities. Elections are held each December. President – Campus and community representative. Attends Hillel events and other Jewish Community events as needed, Creates an agenda and presides at board meetings. Is in close contact with the Hillel Director and the Hillel Executive Board. Attends Advisory Council meetings. Oversees all other positions and events. Faculty Liaison.
V.P Campus Programming – Plans and delegates responsibilities concerning Shabbat programs (And the preparation and cleaning up after them), as well as other activities that take place in the Jewish Student Center. Oversees community and religious programming and house manager. Presides at meetings in the President’s absence.
V.P. Communications – Sends out the E-mails. Sends Listserv Supervisor the updates of names each week to be added/deleted. Oversees Publicity.
V.P. Membership– Creates membership programs and recruits freshman and transfer students. Maintains database of attendance.
Religious Programming– Responsible for execution of Kabbalat Shabbat services. Coordinates transportation to Synagogues during holidays. Responsible for planning events and activities that keep Judaism alive on our campus!
Community Programming - Plans intercollegiate events, community service events, plans dine and discuss programs with guest speakers, plans trips, community oriented events, liaison to Project Yachad (The coalition for Jewish Education in the Lehigh Valley).
Israel Support Advocate – Coordinates with other Israeli Advocacy groups on campus. Reports on Israeli current events and campus events relating to Israel. Supports and advocates Hillel’s mission statement in relation to Israel. Coordinates with the Campus Programming Chair to create Israel advocacy programming on campus.
Fundraising – Coordinates fundraising programs, call-a-thons, etc. Makes sure fundraisers are well planned and that they will be executed fully and responsibly. Possibly petitions for grants and donations.
Publicity – Sends out Web Inmers. Keeps Hillel Society web site updated. Is responsible for Brown and White Advertisements. Creates flyers if necessary.
Secretary - Keeps meeting minutes and notes of things needed to be done and who’s responsible for what.
House Manager - Plans and oversees study hours Creates committees for house improvement (Painting, etc.) Oversight of erection of sukkah. |
