INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this lesson, students will demonstrate their prior knowledge with the use of commas to set off dialogue.

MOTIVATOR/ANTICIPATORY SET: The teacher will briefly introduce the worksheet, providing only the basic instructions.
PROCEDURE: Students will be given a worksheet (page 81 of Daily Language Workouts) in which they will insert commas to set off dialogue. This assessment will be used to create a follow up lesson based on this assessment.
CLOSURE: The teacher will collect the short worksheet.
ASSESSMENT: Students will be assessed by their participation
in class discussions and their performance on the worksheet
using the following rubric.

INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVES: According to their performance on the preassessment worksheet, students will be placed in three groups. Upon completion of the lesson, students will be able to identify the correct placement of commas to set off dialogue.

MOTIVATOR/ANTICIPATORY SET: Students will be divided into 3 groups, according to their performance on the preassessment.
PROCEDURE: Group 1: Given additional instruction and additional practice on the use of commas and quotations. The teacher will give a mini lesson on use and placement and then we will correct the preassessment. Students will then be given Worksheet 1 to complete in class. Group 2: The teacher will give instruction on the correct placement of commas within dialogue. Students will then look through their free reading books to find examples of commas and quotations. This group will be given a paragraph to rewrite (Worksheet 2) and then a writing prompt. Group 3: The teacher will give a short review of use and placement and then give the students a writing prompt and students will write a paragraph or short story (Worksheet 3).
CLOSURE: Perform a quick review of the rules regarding placement of commas to set off dialogue.
ASSESSMENT: Students will be assessed by their participation
in small group discussions and their performance on the respective writing
assignments.
