Engagement/ Anticipatory set:
  • Students will be asked to brainstorm about the current state of their school. This brainstorm will particularly focus on the length of the day, the discipline within the school, the subjects taught, the use of books, and the eventual outcomes from all of the schooling.
  • An excerpt from the novel will be read aloud by myself to the class. This excerpt is on page 59.
  • Students will then be told to list the attributes of this futuristic school.
  • A narrative piece will be created. I will instruct the students to write this piece like a story. All will be written in the first person. The first paragraph will tell how a typical school day runs in this futuristic time. The second paragraph will compare school in 2001 to that of the future. This exercise will initiate student thinking about the novel and how books play a pivotal role in their studies.
Procedure:
  • Homework will be taken out for review.
  • Any questions will be addressed from the previous night’s reading. Students will share these questions, concerns, and points of interest highlighted in the graphic organizer.
  • The character of Farber will be introduced and characterized on the board. Various students will be asked to come to the board and write their thoughts about this character for all to view and copy.
  • Key questions will be addressed about this character. These questions can be found in the Key Discussion Questions section.
  • Students will be asked if they have any additional questions at this time. If there are any, I will first ask other students to try and answer the confusion. If any class members do not know the answer I will answer.
  • A new symbol in the novel will be introduced. The symbol is a book. They will be asked what a book is used for and what the controversy is surrounding books.
  • A few questions will be asked at this time. See Key Discussion Questions section.
  • Students will be given the handout with the box cutout on them.
  • Students will be asked to create a pictorial representation of the following symbols: books, the title of the book, the salamander, the phoenix, and the bottle of pills.
  • The students will be once again divided into groups. These groups will be the same as the ones for the activity center.
  • Three of the groups will work on the cutout box. They will begin to illustrate the connections between the symbols and the novel.
  • The remaining groups will continue work on completing the questions from each activity center.
