Topic:Discussing the story
Grade Level: Grade 8 (all tracks will be studying the novel Fahrenheit 451
Instructional Objectives:
  • Students will utilize their knowledge of the story to take a quiz.
  • Students will review the material taught in class by partaking in a game/quiz orally before the quiz.
  • Students will recall the characterization, imagery, symbols, plot and setting to answer a variety of questions.
Materials:
  • Homework from previous night: six questions about the material from pages 52-72 in the novel.
  • Quiz

Engagement/ Anticipatory set:
  • Students will be asked to think about the title of the novel, Fahrenheit 451. This will be written on the board.
  • They will be told to write this in large print on a sheet of paper.
  • Around the writing Fahrenheit 451 students will be asked to briefly brainstorm, through drawing and words, to illustrate how this title ties into the novel.
  • Students will be asked to share their results with the class.
  • I will explain that this was not the initial title Ray Bradbury had intended for the book.
  • I will give examples from other literary pieces where the author changed the title to fit the content of the book.
Procedure:
  • Students will be asked to arrange themselves into 2 teams.
  • A representative will be designated by the team to keep score.
  • Students will be select to answer the questions by method of quickest response. If the answer is incorrect, the other team gets the chance to answer the question. If that team fails to answer the question correctly, any person within the class may answer the question but will not receive points for their answer.
  • Students will take the quiz I have created.
Key discussion questions:  Questions will be taken from their homework.

    8. Who was there when this occurred?

    10. How many legs does the Hound have?
    11. What is so special about a salamander?
    12. What is the myth behind the phoenix?
    13. What does Clarisse decide about Montag by using a dandelion?
    14. What game do the firemen play with the Hound?
    15. How is the symbol of the salamander used in this part of the reading?
    16. What question does Montag ask his wife that he cannot answer?
    17. Does Mildred turn off the TV when Montag is sick?
    18. What did Montag tell Clarisse about the odor of kerosene?
    19. What does Beatty say about firemen and books?
    20. Whose influence is causing Montag to ask dangerous questions at work?
Closure:
  • Students will hand in their quiz.
  • We will review the contents of the quiz briefly before they leave class.
Extension activity/ Homework:
  • Read to page 88
  • Complete the reflection pageà sample will be displayed once again on the board.
