Topic:Reinforcing proper reading habits
Grade Level: Grade 8 (all tracks will be studying the novel Fahrenheit 451
Instructional Objectives:
  • Students will utilize prior knowledge of the novel to participate in a discussion on the recently read pages.
  • Students will recall information obtained and reported on their characterization charts to complete an informal quiz.
  • Students will collaborate in groups, without their books, to complete the informal quiz.
  • Students will successful utilize the imagery (similes and metaphors) to explain occurrences with the novel.
Materials:
  • Characterization handout to be turned in
  • Worksheet: How well have you read?
  • Novel

Engagement/ Anticipatory set:
  • Students will be asked what perhaps is the significance of the salamander
    • A mythological creature, believed capable of living in or withstanding fire from Greek, Latin, and Middle English
  • The students will be introduced to our new salamander friends
  • A list of names will be generated be all classes and final names selected for tomorrow.
Procedure:
  • Students will take out their characterization sheets. 
  • We will review as a group the details they have written on the sheets.
  • Appropriate questions will be asked to enhance the content on the student sheets.
  • Students will be asked a few questions about the ten pages read for homework. Check the next section for further details.
  • Students will be given the informal quiz to complete. This is to be done without the book. Students may work with only one other person. Their name should appear on the top right corner of their paper.
Key discussion questions:
  • What impression did you get from Montag’s first encounter with the Hound?
  • What other characters did you encounter within these pages?
  • According to the characterization sheets you completed for homework, how would you begin to descried Beatty?
  • What do you think happened to Clarisse?Do you think that Montag really misses her?Why?
Closure:
  • I will review some of the key concepts addressed during the class period including sillies, metaphors, the protagonist, characterization, and the importance of imagery within the story.
  • The literary devices discussed in context of the story will be utilized for the activity center to be completed tomorrow.
  • Students will also be informed that they will be taped tomorrow during class
Extension activity/ Homework:
    Read to the top of page 52; stop at the break about ¼ of the way down the page.
