Topic:Novel Review
Grade Level: Grade 8 (all tracks will be studying the novel Fahrenheit 451

Instructional Objectives:

  • Students will utilize their knowledge of the novel to answer various questions.
  • Students will recall the literary devices we have discussed in previous classes. Such devices will include: simile, metaphor, and symbolism.
  • Students will review their knowledge of the characters to identify quotes, and interactions.
  • Students will analyze specific conflicts to better establish the plot of the novel.
Materials:
  • Key questions from the novel, borrowed from previous lessons.
  • Past quizzes
  • Quote sheet
  • Conflict sheets

Engagement/ Anticipatory set:
  • Students will respond to a question written on the board.
  • The question will read: What do you think the phoenix at the end of the novel symbolizes. Reread this passage found on page 165, and then respond.
  • Students will take a few minutes to jot down some ideas.
  • We will then discuss what some of the students think this symbolizes.
  • Additional questions will be asked dependant upon what points are brough up by the students.
Procedure:
  • Students will be made aware that we will begin to review the test on Tuesday today. This will be accomplished in a game-like format.
  •  
  • Rules will be posted on a piece of poster board displayed on the board for all to see.
  • The rules will include the following:
    1. You be split up into two groups. A person from each team will be selected to keep score.
    2. Individual members of the team will compete head to head to answer toss-up questions on the novel.
    3. The person to answer the toss-up question the quickest will have the opportunity to tag a member within his/her team to answer another question.
    4. Points will only be awarded to that team after the toss-up question has been answered.
    5. If a question cannot be answered correctly, then the question goes to the other team (the person to raise their hand the quickest).
    6. If a question cannot be answered correctly after two attempts, anyone within the class may answer the question for no points.
    7. Un-sportsman-like conduct will result in losing a point.

  • Within the last ten minutes of class, the points will be tallied and a winning team chosen. This team will receive a prize to be determined for Monday!!
