Topic:Final portion of the novel
Grade Level: Grade 8 (all tracks will be studying the novel Fahrenheit 451
Instructional Objectives:
  • Students will utilize their knowledge of the novel to answer various questions.
  • Students will recall the literary devices we have discussed in previous classes. Such devices will include: simile, metaphor, and symbolism.
  • Students will review their knowledge of the csymbols to realize a change from the begining of the novel to the end.
  • Students will analyze specific passages to bring the ending to life.
Materials:
  • Key passages from the novel:  Dialogue between Granger and Montag, a quote from the Book of Revelation.
  • Loose-leaf paper
  • Vocab Handout

Engagement/ Anticipatory set:
  • Students will respond to a question written on the board.
  • The question will read: What do you think the phoenix at the end of the novel symbolizes. Reread this passage found on page 165, and then respond.
  • Students will take a few minutes to jot down some ideas.
  • We will then discuss what some of the students think this symbolizes.
  • Additional questions will be asked dependant upon what points are brough up by the students.
Procedure:
  • Students will be made aware that we will begin to review the test. Tomorrow there will be a review in a game-like format.
  • A students will read the selected passage from page 165 out loud to the class.  The students will follow along on their own.
  • I will give the students a minute to gather their thoughts on this topic.
  • Students will be asked to share first what the phoenix symbolized at the beginingof the novel.
  • Now, they will try and explain how the symbol has changed in this passage.
  • Students, individually, will create a chart comparing the phoenix at the begining and at the end. 
  • students will share their findings.
  • Another passage will be highlighted to the students.  Iwill read this passage out loud to the class.
  • I will exaplin to the student that this passage comes from the Book of Revelation.
Key discussion questions:
  1. What did the phoenix symbolize at the begining of the novel?
  2. Where was it located?
  3. On whom?
  4. After reading that passage, what do you think the phoenix symbolizes now?
  5. Who is taking part in this conversation?
  6. Where can you find the Book of Revelation?
  7. Why is this passage significant?  Think about the bomb exploding in the city.
Closure:
  • We will briefly review what we covered during class. 
  • I will remind the stduents that we will be going over the entire noevl tomorrow in class
Extension activity/ Homework:
  • Write the definitions to the vocab words I have provided for you. One definition for each word. Make sure you know these definitions for the review.
