Reflection on Portfolio

We are living in a time where technology has begun to play a major role in our society. It is all around us. It influences the way we communicate with family, shop for birthday gifts, manage our money, run a business, and even meet our soul mates. Since technology has become such an important aspect of everyones' lives, it is essential that as teachers, we start to incorporate it into our classrooms and our lessons each day.

I have had the opportunity at Lehigh to expand on my knowledge and skills in technology. I have had the opportunity to make many Web pages and even an interactive Web lesson. I have learned how to incorporate technology into my lessons and what resources I can use to do this. I feel very comfortable using technology, and I feel this is a huge asset to any school. Computers and calculators can be very useful to a math teacher like myself. I have found that a graphing calculator can enhance many of my lessons.

This year I taught a lesson where my pre-calculus students were required to determine the trigonometric equation of a bouncing slinky. For this lesson we used TI-83 calculators and a harmonic motion sensor. Feel free to check out this lesson.

Reflection: I think this lesson was a great way for my students to see how technology can be incorporated into learning even difficult concepts in math. The students definitely struggled with this assignment because they had a challenging task incorporating what we had learned in class. Although many of them complained while doing this assignment, I also think that it was a very effective lesson. We had some difficulties keeping our data in the calculators, because there is a glitch in the program we were using. The students became aware that we can not always rely on technology to do everything for us, and we were then able to discuss reasonable causes for error. If I were to do this lesson again I would have students finding the curve of a variety of objects, not just a slinky. I think it would have been more interesting for the students to compare objects.
