Lesson Plan

Topic: Human Parasites and Human Parasitic Diseases.

Grade Level: 9th Grade.

Time: Two class periods (40 minutes).

Instructional Objectives: The teacher will help to reinforce research, through looking at diseases that are caused by protists, viruses, fungi (even bacteria). The students will use the internet, a journal/magazine or a book.

Concepts Addressed: Students will reasearch a disease caused by a virus, fungi, protist and bacteria--students will discover how these various organisms impact humans, not only physically but economically.

Materials required: Library Summary Sheet, Parasites of Humans Sheet.

Engagement: Reinforce to students how these organisms that werre studied have real world applications.

Procedure: 1. Use the Library summary Sheet and Parasites of Humans Sheet s a guideline.
                  2. Students are to work in groups of two.
                  3. The Library summary sheet asks students to: a) describe the research strategy used for finding the information needed, b) list three references used to find the information (each reference must come from a different source--book, website, and magazine/journal/newspaper article). The library summary sheets are due at the end of the first class period
                  4. Using the parasites of Human Sheet (note that each group has already chosen their disease to research) researh the disease with the questions asked serving as a guideline.
                  5. The answers to these questions will be due at a later date. The answesr are to be typed or written in blue or black ink (one paper per team).

Key Discussion Questions: What are the symptoms of the disease? What is the mode odf transmission? What is the treatment? What is the life cycle of the disease?

Closure: A summary of what was accmplished would be given. Ask the students if there are any questions.

Assessment: Collection of the library summary sheet will show the thinking process of the group.

Extension Activities: The information gained here, will be useful, in another lesson (see Lesson 6) for the prsentation of what was learned.
