Topic: Fungi
Grade Level: 9th Grade
Time: One class period (40 minutes).
Instructional Objectives: By creating a practical/activity
center, the teacher is able to assess student ability to identify fungi
physically. Teacher will test the student knowledge of the various fungi.
Concepts Adressed: Students will identify the Imperfect
fungi, the sac fungi, the zygote fungi and the club fungi--the four types
of fungi.
Materials Required: mushrooms, oranges (spioled),
mildewed shower curtain, lichen.
Engagement: Remind students of the prior knowledge
gained about the fungi. Explain the pln for today's class.
Procedure: 1. Students in groups of three
will rotate around to the ten stations (numberd 1-10). Each group has three
minutes.
2. At each station is a type of fungi. The students must identify the type.
3. Students will record in their notebook, their choice as to the correct
fungi type.
4. After completion of the exercise, students will retur to their seats.
Key discussion questions: How can you tell the
difference between each type of fungi? What are the common characteristics
of fungi? How do fungi differ?
Closure: Reinforce what was accomplished in the
lesson. Ask if there are any questions. Students will be prepared for te
next lesson.
Assessment: By observation as well as collecting the notebooks, understanding can be assessed.
Extension Activities: Students can grow their own
fungi. Using oranges or bread, the growth of the fungi can be traced over
time. The sudents can identify the type of fungi that is present.
