Lesson Plan

Topic: Parasites of Man.

Grade Level: 9th Grade.

Time:  2 class periods (40 minutes each).

Instructional Objectives: Introduce students to the concept of disease being caused by organisms such as: bactera, protists and viruses. Through researcg of the diseases caused by these organisms: information about symptoms, treatment, and prevention as well as information about the life cycle of the organisms involved was obtained. There was group work (two people in each group) done on this project. Presentations of what was unearthed are being presented.

Concepts Addressed: The lesson emphasized the presentations. The visual and oral representation of the information was obtained in a 5-8 minute period. Through these demonstrations, there will be group work as the grasping of the interconnectedness of man and the various organsisms surrounding them. Things like the quality of voice and work and clarity of message, and the quality of the response to questions were assessed.

Materials Required: Handouts from the various presenters summarized the important information that was needed to get across. Also, a visual aid was used (either a transparency or poster or model) to convey the important information.

Engagement: As is the routine, the class will be called to order (during this time attendance can be taken). There will be no warm-up question. The students know what is expected of them.

Procedure: 1. Go over what was accomplished in the last class. Mention what the class hopes to accomplish today.
                  2. Go over important information and announcements.
                  3. Call up the students who are presenting t the front of the room. Five groups are presenting in each class period.                 Each group is to present 5-8 minutes.
                  4. Grade students according to the rubric developed (see Oral Report Rubric in Assessment).
                  5. After each group presnts, there will be a brief question and answer period.

Key Discussion Questions: The students were more or less responsible for asking the questions of the presenters. However, means of prevention and treatment, and symptoms have to be addressed. Also, any important information that was gained from the exercise should be shared with the audience. Also, any important information that was gained from the exercise should be ahared with the audience.

Closure: It will be mentioned what was accomplished and what is expected of the students for the next class period. Ask the students if there were any questions.

Assessment: Using the developed rubric (see Oral Report Rubric in Assessment), the quality of the oral presentation was assessed.

Extension Activities: The presentations were more or less the extension activity themselves. However, the material presented could be tested at a future time or the applicability of the diseases covered to say, the various systems that will be covered at a later time. Also, there could be comparisons between the mode of infecrion of bacteria, protists and viruses.
