Philosophy of Teaching and Learning:

As an educator, I would want to create the type of classroom atmosphere that fosters learning. Where students aren’t afraid to voice opinions and are free to be creative and express themselves accordingly. I would want to create a classroom where there is respect for not just the teacher but students respecting themselves as well as each other. As a teacher, I should be available to my students, and not distant. I should not be an authority figure who is feared or deemed unapproachable. I think that as an educator, I should foster learning. I think that a teacher should be inclusive, in that, it must be realized that every student is different—with different learning styles and level of ability. As a teacher, I must recognize this and respond accordingly. Students should be hungry for knowledge and ready to master the material that they are learning. Education today, just goes beyond the three R’s. It involves, not just be a teacher but in some cases a parent, an advisor and a confidant. I realize that and feel that I can function in these capacities and am willing to meet these challenges.

Classroom Management Plan:

There are several means in which to manage a classroom. Silence, proves to be an effective tool, and this enables the students focus their attention on the teacher. Most, effective from observations and experience, is having the lesson for a class effectively planned. The teacher must have their students conditioned to the rules and regulations of the class—they must make themselves clear of what the expectations are going to be out of them. Let students know what will and will not be tolerated. Students should know that their behavior will be assessed in addition to their performance in the classroom. When having the lesson effectively planned, students have a goal for that day and know what they have to accomplish. I think this creates a more effective lesson and manageable classroom. A teacher must circle, the room in order to get an accurate read of the class as a whole. A teacher must be observant so that no inappropriate behavior goes unrecognized so that a pattern is created. Although reprimanding students, it must not be done with malice or bitterness. It should be done privately as well so that the student isn’t embarrassed. Every student deserves some respect. The effective use of these strategies will create a more manageable classroom.

Family Communication Plan:

The family of the student should be updated, beyond just the parent-teacher night events. Students who are continually absent or can be seen to be struggling academically (or even emotionally, mentally, and physically). It is the responsibility of the teacher to keep the parent informed. By talking with  the parent, one may be able to determine what the problem is, and possibly work with them and the student to come up with an effective strategy in handling the situation. Family contact should be approached carefully and tactfully. In some cases, the teacher must realize that it is the home environment that causes the student to “act out” or display a lack of interest in school.
