Reflection:This lesson was designed using student assessment data by means of a KWL. (click to view the KWL). KWL is an effective methodology for identifying students prior knowledge on a concept and linking that knowledge to the new concept being introduced. Similarly, the KWL can also assess what the students have learned by the end of the class as well as identify any misconcepts. The lesson was effective in that students enjoy taking responsibility for their own learning. By asking students to express what they would like to learn about the concept or what interests them the most students felt as if they contributed to the class curriculum, thus empowering or engaging them to directly participate in their own learning. Most importantly, this lesson successfully meet curricular goals while taking into account students'' interests, needs and aptitudes. Future improvements to this lesson would be to assign a time limit to the silent passing. That is, I should have been clearer and assign for example 30 seconds for each entry.

 Guided Notes
 Silent Passing: Mixture
Warm Up:
 Silent Passing: An index card with the word “mixture” is passed down each row. The students should
brainstorm & add additional information to the already existing definition/information generated by other students.
Procedure:
 Begin with the warm-up activity
 Students will each receive a KWL chart
 K: Have each student on a sheet of paper brainstorm about what they “Know” about mixtures.
 As a whole class activity the students will share their results
 The results will be recorded on the board
 W: Students will express what they would like to know about mixtures
 The results will be shared with the whole class and recorded on the board
 The teacher will also record what additional concepts will be discussed on the topic of mixtures
 Based on the results of the initial steps of the KWL the teacher will modify and adapt the whole class
discussion on mixtures insuring that the following topics are covered
1. Mixtures
A. Solutions
1. Solute
2.Solvent
3. Physical/Chemical properties
4. Heterogeneous / Homogeneous
B. Suspension
C. Colloids
Closure:
Students will return to their KWL chart and record what they have learned about mixtures and hand in the
chart.

 What are the unique features of each of the three types of mixtures?
Extension Activity:
Students will be asked to identify and bring in to school an example of a solution, suspension and a colloid from
common household products.
