Family communication can be a very effective tool when teaching children and must be done on a consistent basis. Simply communicating with parents during parent teacher conferences and when one is concerned that a student is not doing well is not enough; the parents must be included in the students’ educational process. Parents should not only know when their child is doing poorly, but should also be informed when their child is doing well.
Parents should be given updates on their students’ progress throughout a marking period so that there are no surprises at the end. I feel the parent deserves to be given updates at least once every three weeks. Also, the parent should know what their child is studying at any given time throughout the school year so that they may join the child in the learning process if they wish. The more the teacher can communicate with the parent, the better the lines of communication with that parent will become. Therefore, the teacher can use this valuable resource in better understanding the student and adapting to meet the students needs.
