Assessment for this lesson will be done through a creative writing assignment.  Students will be given the option of answering one of the following questions, in essay form.
 
 

• Discuss how canals affected the growth of the nation.  In what ways did canals improve upon prior methods of transportation?  Were there any disadvantages to canal transportation?  In what ways has transportation improved since the 19th century?
• In what ways did the Lehigh Canal affect the growth of Pennsylvania, and specifically the Lehigh Valley.  What effects did the canal have on jobs, population, agriculture, industry, and the daily lives of residents?  Was this growth stopped when the canal stopped transporting coal, or did it continue?
