Introduction
Canals in the United States

In the early 1800's the United
States was experiencing a time of very rapid growth. Population was
increasing at a high rate and westward migration had begun. Cities
such as Pittsburgh, Cleveland, and Chicago were growing rapidly and needed
a more efficient way to transport goods to and from the cities and ports
in the East. Transportation of goods over land was impossible due
to poor roads and high expenses, canals offered a faster, cheaper, more
efficient way to transport goods. The formation of canals in the
U.S. was necessary for the development of the country.
