Survey Overview
In order to help us better understand how new technologies are affecting teaching and learning at Lehigh, we surveyed our faculty, students, and a group of library and technical staff. The last campus-wide survey on this topic, conducted in advance of the 2003 Middle States Periodic Review Report, focused mostly on identifying what types of technologies were being used and how frequently. For the current survey, we wanted to learn more about how these technologies were being put to use, whether they were enhancing teaching and learning, and how well students were gaining literacy with these new tools. We also hoped to get feedback on the quality of campus support for the use of technology. Finally, we were looking for an understanding of our campus’ vision for how teaching and learning might be enhanced in the future. The survey therefore focused on the following five areas:
- current uses technology and their educational impact
- faculty assessment of the effectiveness of these technologies
- information literacy and academic integrity
- effectiveness at promoting and supporting use of technology
- visions of the future.
The survey was sent to 447 full time faculty, of whom 184 (41%) responded. A similar survey was sent to 6600 students (2048 graduate and 4620 undergraduate), of whom 1297 (20%) responded (442 graduate and 853 undergraduate, responses rates 19% and 22% respectively). As with our 2003 survey, the survey was conducted online and so we expect the numbers may be skewed, as the sample of faculty who chose to complete it are likely those who are more comfortable using technology. Thus, the percentages in our analysis may slightly overestimate the extent of technology adoption and slightly underestimate the extent to which faculty do not use technology in their teaching. Nevertheless, because both surveys were subject to the same problem, we can comforably compare results from the two.
