The move from university housing to an off-campus apartment has become a rite of passage for many undergraduate students. It also can present a dire problem for today's tech-savvy students: internet accessibility. Curtis MacDonald '05, an integrated business and engineering (IBE) major, jumped at the chance to convert the issue into a business opportunity. He started tapping into his entrepreneurial education to start hField Technologies, Inc. before he graduated from Lehigh. Now, his Wi-Fire adapter is letting students and Internet addicts access wireless Internet connections from up to 1,000 feet away—three times the range of normal wireless adapters. The product was initially marketed to college bookstores and campuses in 2006 before going national in 2007, at which time the company started developing two other new wireless technologies. "IBE is four years of training in entrepreneurship," he says. "It gives you a strong background in business and engineering."
