Vitae:

Matthew Joseph Perricone was born on October 14, 1978 in Indianapolis, IN to his parents, Joseph and Elaine Perricone. He was raised in Springfield, VA with his younger brother, Jonathan, where he played soccer and basketball. Matt attended Paul VI High School in Fairfax, VA where he also cultivated his appreciation for the arts by playing piano and acting in numerous high school productions. He was a member of the National Honor Society and graduated valedictorian of his class in June 1996. He matriculated to Lehigh University as a Dean’s Scholar and a National Merit Scholar that Fall. During his time at Lehigh, he became a brother at Sigma Phi Epsilon and was an active member of the executive board for 2 years. Matt was also inducted into several honor societies at Lehigh: Phi Eta Sigma as a freshman in 1997; Phi Beta Kappa honor society and Tau Beta Pi engineering honor society as a junior in 1998; Order of Omega (which honors the leaders in Greek life on Lehigh’s campus) and Alpha Sigma Mu (served as president) as a senior in 1999. He majored in Materials Science and Engineering and was awarded the 2000 Dr. Cyril John Osborn Award by the department faculty for his efforts. However, his interests were not limited to engineering and he took advantage of theatrical opportunities on campus and in the community, starring in 8 main stage productions on campus as part of both the Department of Theatre and the Music Department’s Scenes from Musical Theater and Opera Workshop and even co-directed a production during the sabbatical of the program directors. Matt also co-founded the Lehigh University Mass Choir in Fall of 1997 and directed the choir until April 2002; for his efforts he received the 1999 Lehigh University Newman Foundation Service Award and Lehigh’s 2000 Contribution to Student Life Award. He graduated from Lehigh with highest honors with his Bachelors degree in June 2000.

That summer, Matt began work on a Masters program in Materials Science and Engineering at Lehigh University as a Presidential Scholar a Lehigh University Engineering Fellowship recipient. As a first year graduate student, he won three competitive national fellowships in 2001: the National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship, the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship, and the American Welding Society Graduate Research Fellowship. In January 2002, Matt passed the PhD Qualifying Exam required by the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, establishing his status as a candidate for a PhD degree from Lehigh University. He received his M.S. degree in Materials Science and Engineering from Lehigh University in May 2003.
