Vitae:

Weiping Liu was born on November 17, 1963 to his parents, Guanghai Liu and Juying Deng, in Hunan, China. In 1979, with high scores in the national college entrance examinations, Weiping entered Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics (BUAA), one of the top key universities in China, and received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Welding and Manufacturing Engineering in 1983 and 1986 respectively, with a number of honors. He then got enrolled in Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT), which is among the top ten universities in China and has the National Key Laboratory for Advanced Welding Production Technology, and started his doctoral study in Welding Engineering. In 1989, Weiping received his Ph.D. degree with an outstanding dissertation (judged by a special committee) and was then the youngest Ph.D. recipient in the university. Upon his graduation, Weiping was offered a Lecturer position in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Hebei University of Technology in Tianjin, China. In 1991, he was awarded a DAAD (German Academic Exchange Center) research fellowship to conduct research as a post-doctoral fellow at the Technical University of Berlin, Berlin, Germany. After his research stay in Germany, Weiping went back to his country in 1993 and became an Associate Professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Dalian Railway Institute (DRI) in Dalian, China. He was elected as a member of the Academic Committee and a member of the Evaluation Committee of Professional Titles at DRI in 1994, and was exceptionally promoted to Professor in 1996 due to his outstanding research and teaching accomplishments. From October 1997 to April 1998, Weiping was a Visiting Scientist at Max-Planck Institute for Metal Research in Stuttgart, Germany. When he was in China, Weiping attended several international conferences in Germany, England and USA. He got a best-paper award at the 5th International Conference on Brazing, High Temperature Brazing and Diffusion Bonding in 1998, and served as a member of International Scientific Advisory Board for the International Brazing and Soldering Conference (IBSC 2000) organized by AWS and ASM International in 2000. He also served as session chairman or cochairman at several international conferences. From October 2000 to September 2001, he worked in the Joining and Welding Research Institute (JWRI) at Osaka University as a Visiting Professor sponsored by Japanese Ministry of Education. In December 2001, Weiping came to Lehigh University as a Visiting Scientist working in the EMG.
