Training and Orientation
Right to Know
A large amount of cylinders are in use at Lehigh University and they serve different purposes. While some cylinders are used in laboratories for experimental purposes, others are used for welding and cutting operations. Regardless of what the compressed gases are used for, they share two things in common. Used properly they are an invaluable resource; used improperly they are a bomb waiting to explode. All personnel using gas cylinders should receive training prior to using them in a research setting. Also, supervisors should research the chemical and gas characteristics and the properties associated with each individual gas used. This can be accomplished by reviewing the Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for the gas being used.
