May 17. Prevention Science Cluster: World Cafe
9:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
The Wood Dining Hall, Iacocca Hall
The Prevention Science Cluster, a multi-college group seeks to explore the theoretical, empirical, and practice implications of prevention through an interdisciplinary cultural lens. Prevention sciences encompass etiology, epidemiology and intervention on a variety of health and social problems, including but not limited to substance abuse, mental health, HIV/AIDS, violence, accidents, teenage pregnancy, suicide, delinquency, STDs, obesity, diet/nutrition, exercise, and chronic illness. Prevention research over the past several decades has led to a growing number of empirically based practices that have not only influenced prevention practice but also improved targeted health and social problems. Future focus on prevention science and practice will require research models that present an active collaboration between prevention researchers and practitioners. To explore this further, the Prevention Science Cluster hosts a Panel Presentation and World Cafe. The intent is to engage in a dialogue among members of the Lehigh Community and Health provider partners (e.g., Lehigh Valley Health Network, St. Luke’s Hospital, Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Hospital, Community Services for Children) in developing best practices.
A panel of three distinguished speakers will speak to current issues impacting prevention science:
- Dr. Michael Grossman, Distinguished Professor of Economics, The City University of New York Graduate Center;
- Dr. Kimberly Hoagwood, Professor of Clinical Psychology and Psychiatry at Columbia University;
- Dr. Thomas Kratochwill, Sears-Bascom Professor and Director of the School Psychology Program at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
This will be followed by a World Café involving roundtable discussions of issues pertinent to prevention science.
